Protect Your Child's Spine: Backpack Safety Tips

When it comes to school supplies, backpacks are top-of-the-list must-haves for kids from kindergarten to high school. While many children and teens choose their backpacks based on color or cool designs, ensuring that the backpack provides proper support and comfort is critical to avoid straining their growing bodies.

If not chosen or used properly, backpacks can lead to neck, back, and shoulder issues that affect your child’s well-being. Dr. Andrew offers some tips to prevent injuries and keep your child’s spine healthy.

Common Backpack-Related Injuries

At our practice, we see a lot of neck strain because the heavier the backpack, the more forward the head goes, leading to tension, headaches, and shoulder pain. The risk is higher for kids who prefer wearing their backpack on one shoulder. In addition to neck issues, carrying heavy backpacks too low on the back can strain the lower spine, resulting in back pain.

Selecting the Right Backpack

So, what should you look for when selecting a backpack? Dr. Andrew recommends: “Make sure the settings fit your child so they can put it on appropriately.” Ideally, the backpack should have adjustable padded straps, sit comfortably between the shoulder blades, and be no wider than the child’s torso. Look for backpacks with waist or chest straps for better weight distribution.

Packing Smartly

Your child’s backpack shouldn’t feel like they’re toting bricks. Encourage your child to pack only what they need for the day to minimize strain. Place heavier items in the main compartment close to the back, while lighter items like pens and pencils can be placed in the smaller pockets. Dr. Andrew also suggests leaving non-essential items in lockers whenever possible. Remember: “Less is more,” especially regarding what your child carries daily.

Watch for Warning Signs

Even before your child mentions pain, look for signs like slouching, tilting to one side, or regularly readjusting the straps. If your kiddo frequently complains of discomfort, consider reevaluating how the backpack is used or switching to one that offers more support.
